Greeting Fellow Boomers. This week a New York Times article ran about a recent report from the National Assessment of Educational Progress. The key findings were U.S. students are less proficient about our nations history than any other subject. Overall, only 20 percent of fourth-graders and 12 percent of high school seniors demonstrated proficiency in the subject.
As Boomers we were keenly aware of American history. A value well reinforced by our schools and parents. Even the media helped. Walt Disney's Sunday night programs encouraged interest in the American Revolution, such as Swamp Fox, the American frontier and Founding Fathers.
This must be a concern for all of us in our nation. We face serious financial and political stresses now and in the years to come, including our American Constitution, principles and values which are under attack. As Boomers let's encourage our schools to provide a quality education that prepares our future leaders to succeed in life, and to maintain the blessings and responsibilities of a free society. Our history is a legacy and blue print of freedom for future generations.
